The large redwood near post #3 is an old growth tree that has been through many fires, which happen naturally throughout the centuries. Even though it seems to be heavily fire-damaged, the tree continues to live.
Walking into this forest is comparable to stepping back in time. Fossil records show that redwoods grew naturally in many places across the northern hemisphere. Due to climate change and other factors, Coast Redwoods now only grow naturally in a narrow 40-mile wide and 450-mile long coastal strip from southern Oregon to southern Monterey County in California.

The more we study these ancient redwood forests, the more we realize that the diversity of life forms within them is absolutely essential to the forests’ overall health.
